MINNEAPOLIS, MN - April 12, 2018 - Minneapolis South High School senior Michael Werner will receive the Stacy Robinson Leadership Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation. He will be recognized at the 11th Annual Minnesota Football Honors on April 29 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

"Michael is an outstanding man of integrity and a solid football player,” Tigers coach Rodney Lossow said. “Michael is a young man whom I will truly miss but am thankful I had the opportunity to coach."

Werner’s athletic and academic success and leadership qualities have had a positive impact at Minneapolis South. On the football field, he was a four-year starter for the Tigers. Werner had never played football before joining the eighth-grade team, but by his upperclassman years he transformed himself into an offense and defensive line starter through hard work and dedication to strength and conditioning. He never missed a game his senior season despite undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason. Werner twice received the All-District Why We Play Award as the top all-around football player. He also competed in wrestling and track and field.

Werner earned Academic All-State status for excellence in sports and school. He is an honor roll student at South, and has taken post-secondary classes this school year to get a head start on college. Werner would like to study exercise science.

Taking pride in his community, Werner can often be found lending a hand wherever help is needed. He has given his time to clean up his school and grounds, set up at events, help at youth sports clinics and more.

The Stacy Robinson Leadership Award is named for the St. Paul Central graduate who left a legacy of leadership in the community in addition to excellence on the field at all levels of sports.
