MINNEAPOLIS, MN – March 30, 2016 - Underwood Public School senior Matthew Biegler has been selected by the Minnesota Chapter of the Football National Football Foundation as one of this year’s Scholar Athletes. The eight winners, chosen for academic excellence, leadership and community involvement, will be recognized at the 9th Annual Minnesota Football Honors event April 17th at the Hilton Minneapolis.

On the gridiron, Biegler is a two-time all-state selection at the 9-man level. The lineman/tight end helped the Rockets reach three straight state tournaments, including runner-up finishes in 2013 and 2015. Biegler was named Sub-District West’s most valuable lineman as a senior, as well as taking home All-Section 4 and team MVP honors. Biegler, who set Underwood’s season and career records for sacks, was selected to play in the Minnesota high school all-star game. He also participates in basketball, track and field and trapshooting for Underwood.

Biegler ranks first in his class academically. The perpetual A honor roll student earned 9-Man Academic All-State recognition in 2015. Biegler is a National Honor Society member who has won the EXCEL Award, English Award (twice), Chemistry Award and Knowledge Bowl Excellence in Science Award. He won the American Math Competition and placed second in the Economics State Challenge. Biegler was nominated for the Triple A Award. He plans to study engineering at North Dakota State University.

In addition to athletics, knowledge bowl, 4H, choir, student council and more, Biegler devotes hours of his time to serving the community. He volunteers through his church and school as well as causes including outdoor cleanup, the Salvation Army, education formation, music and more. Matt’s parents are Curt and Mary Jo.

The 9th Annual Minnesota Football Honors event is presented by the Minnesota Vikings. College and professional football Hall of Fame inductees are scheduled to attend, and WCCO-TV news personality Frank Vascellaro will return for his ninth year as Master of Ceremonies. The event is open to the public. To register or for additional information about this year’s Minnesota Football Honors, please visit www.minnesotafootballhonors.com.
