FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – June 26, 2020 –  St. Paul Harding Senior High School’s Destiny Azonwu has been named the Stacy Robinson Leadership Award Winner by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Azonwu, a St. Paul, Minn. native, will be recognized during a July television broadcast. This award honors the late Stacy Robinson, a St. Paul Central graduate who left a strong legacy of community leadership and excellence in athletics.

Azonwu was a standout in the trenches for St. Paul Harding’s football program. During his career, he became a two-time All-District offensive and defensive lineman. Azonwu also earned All-District Defensive Player of the Year honors last season. In 2019, he recorded 50 tackles, seven sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, a blocked punt and one defensive touchdown.

In the classroom, Azonwu accumulated a 3.71 GPA and finished within the top 20 percent of his class. He pushed himself academically and is an IB Diploma candidate. Over the course of his high school career, Azonwu participated in track and field, wrestling, soccer and basketball. He sang in the Honors Chamber Choir and was heavily involved in extracurricular activities. Azonwu’s impact extended into the local Twin Cities community. He led youth football camps, participated in Earth Day cleanup and frequently assisted with local sports programs.

"His character and relentless work ethic provide a model for younger student-athletes. He is patient when teaching his teammates, but provides an energy and charisma that inspires them to succeed,” said coach Otto Kraus. "Destiny is a student with a culturally diverse background. He has developed the ability to use this diverse experience to enrich his own learning and is quick to connect those experiences to issues within global contexts.”

Minnesota Football Honors is hosting a show to honor this year’s high school, college and Minnesota Vikings award winners. The broadcast is set to air in July. Special guests, including Vikings players, are scheduled to make appearances. An official broadcast date will be announced soon on www.minnesotafootballhonors.com
