FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – June 23, 2020 – Lakeville South High School’s George Brekke has been named a Scholar Athlete by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Football Foundation. This annual award honors Minnesota high school football players for their outstanding athletic, academic and community service accomplishments. Brekke, a Lakeville, Minn. native, is one of nine scholar-athletes who will be recognized during a July television broadcast.

Brekke started at safety, tight end and long snapper for the Lakeville South Cougars. When the football program needed his versatility, Brekke shifted to new positions. The team captain was a two-time All-District selection and received second team All-Metro recognition from KARE-11. Brekke accumulated a 4.24 GPA and recently earned Academic All-State honors.

“George's selflessness and team-first approach to the game speaks volumes of his character and represent what Minnesota high school football is all about,” said Lakeville South head coach Benjamin Burk. “He’s a model student in the community of our school, elevating those around him. He’s a school building leader and a friend to students from all backgrounds.”

Outside of school, Brekke participated in a variety of community service projects, including the “Cougars Leading Cougars” program, church events and youth sports camps. Through his involvement with the school’s “Links Club,” Brekke connected with special needs students. Not only that, but Brekke twice qualified for the state DECA competition, which helped him develop key leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

Minnesota Football Honors is hosting a show to honor this year’s high school, college and Minnesota Vikings award winners. The broadcast is set to air in July. Special guests, including Vikings players, are scheduled to make appearances. An official broadcast date will be announced soon on www.minnesotafootballhonors.com
